A new week begins
Greetings from the Ostrich family! (In Russian, Straus in its alphabetic form translates as “ostrich.” Weird, eh?) Another leisurely morning, as our pickup was not until 11:20 am. Today’s lunch was at Nautilus, a submarine shaped hamburger joint that has terrible hamburgers. At least that’s what we were cautioned against. I had borsht and crepes, and Sarah had dessert (crepes with crème caramel). It was all pretty good for under $4.

We had another good visit with Asel. They were feeding her when we got there, so we were able to witness the rapid fire shoveling action of her caregivers. They have to feed lots of kids, so they do it like there’s a race against time, and if she’s not fed by 1 pm, she turns into a gremlin (and not the cute Gizmo kind). She’s starting to eat solid, albeit mushed up food. Today’s lunch was some sort of meat and potato puree. Mmmm, good! They also give her water from a shot glass. At least, we think it was water.

She’s starting to get over her cold, but since she just ate, she was very content to sit with us or be held and take in the wonder of it all. We shared the room again with the Cashette family. When our visit was over, she cried a little as we walked away. It was very sad, but we also were happy that she didn’t want us to go. Awwwwww.

After our visit we met with the primary doctor and the orphanage director to go over her medical information to date. For some reason the doctor reminded me of the dentist from Marathon Man. Thankfully, no one was hurt. Asel has a clean bill of health, and Eugene our translator says that the “final” diagnosis information is as good as any they ever see. So we’re pretty stoked about that. They have not discovered any allergies to food or medicines or American parents, so that’s good too. There is very little known about her birth parents, other than they are both Kazak, and the mom is short (5’1”). But, I have it on good authority that spectacular children can be born from short mothers.

After the medical info was discussed, Irina, the director, presented us with a cushion made by the orphanage staff, and said some nice things about how she’s happy that Asel has found a family to love and be loved by. Awwwwwww. Five visits down, 9 to go until we can head to court.

Dinner was…. uneventful. Have a good Monday.

I can't tell you how fun it is to read all of your journals! Darren, I think you should do this for at least the first year and then you can sign some amazing book deal for millions. I check your site before I check my email that's how compelling you are! She is so cute and I love her dark eyes and spikey hair : ) Hope you guys are surviving on food sold from hamburger shaped submarines. You know we can always ship you some peanut butter and in n out if you get desperate! I know the name game was yesterday but my input is Aselle - I think it's very sweet and helps with the pronunciation - I was calling her Azel before your explanation - oops - Anyways - wishing you all wonderful thoughts and thank you again for sharing all this goopy stuff with us - definite smiles all around!!

Regarding the children born from short mothers - it's actually the FIRST born children from short mothers that turn out spectacularly. The runts of the litter grow to be too tall and fair-skinned with light hair. Yeeesh.
Sounds like the baby is getting better food than you guys. I'd ask for some of that meat and potato stuff. Seen any good movies lately?

D-
I take off for a week and look at everything that gets posted on my return. First of all, she is absolutely beautiful! You guys look like you are having a great time. The blog is, of course, fantastic...but that's what I expected. I have it on fairly good authority that the next J.K. Rowling book is called Harry Potter and the Microwaved Sock. Nice work.

Can't wait for the next post!

Hmmmm... I think your sources are suspect. Or perhaps you conveniently left a word out of the information? Perhaps what this so-called good authority ACTUALLY said was that "spectacular FEMALE children can be born from short mothers". No one in my family is either short or spectacular, so unfortunately I have no data to contribute to the theory. There are, however, an awful lot of females in my family... just ask my dad! He forever laments being outnumbered... a situation you would do well to prepare yourself for, Darren! -Nina

What's in a name...?

Glad to hear all goes well! I have to tell you, I have gone my entire life with people mispronoucing my name. That, in itself, has made me more me. So, no worries (assuming that is a good thing!). Whatever name your darling gets, you can't go wrong. I do think Asella is lovely and less likely to lead to identity crises. Eee-vaughn

Darren, I just got online with your blog - lost the email you sent so all this is new to me. She is really adorable and so glad to hear the doctor's report is so good. Keep these coming! Everything here is going just fine. I told Paige R to stop copying you on every little email about scheduling!! Hope that works.

Hi Sarah and Darren-
Teri shared you web site with me, as I have been asking about your little girl. I am so excited that the day is finally here that you get to meet your daughter. She is so cute and looks very smart, like she knows who you are and has been waiting for you just to come and take her home. Your pictures and stories are so wonderful and I look forward to reading more, and meeting Aselle soon!! (that would be my vote on the spelling of her name) I am quite partial to the extra E, it finishes the name.

Have a great trip!
Janelle
