Tour de Kaz
Another note from the management: The author of this journal would like us to thank you for your comments and let you know the following:
1. Microwaving clothing is a practiced method of dormitory drying and has been successfully achieved on many occasions by the perpetrator of such actions.
2. Darren was working on approximately 4 hours sleep within a 60 hour period.
3. There is an old Kazak expression, which loosely translated means: “Spring has arrived! Let us burn our socks and tromp barefoot through the muck!”
4. There is no correlation between one’s ability to raise a child and the decision to irradiate cotton.

Thank you for your concern – The management. Now, on with the thingamajig.

Ah, the weekend… Today’s calendar includes a tour of Kostanai, and then a visit to the orphanage, followed by and afternoon of plumbing, and then dinner. The tour was interesting. Our first stop was a Russian Orthodox church.

Sarah was required to put on a sarong type thing, since she was wearing pants, and her coat was not long enough to cover her booty, or something. Kim had to put a shawl (they called it a veil) on her head. Us guys were fine as we were. No one seems to care if we show of our jean clad booties or our stylish hair-do’s. The church was beautiful, inside and out, but I was constantly harassed by tiny old ladies as I snapped photographs. I had paid the fee to be allowed to do so, but they did not seem to think that was the case. Very bizarre.

Our next stop was the soccer stadium. Apparently the Kostanai team is pretty good. I’m hoping we can go see a game and maybe take part in a soccer riot. After that we went to Victory Park, which commemorates the end of WWII. There is a memorial wall with the names of Kostanai soldiers, and a statue of Lenin.

Next up was the farmer’s monument, which celebrates the Virgin Lands movement of the 1950’s. [Looking forward to the comment on this one, Hugh.] There is more to see here in town, but we’ll have to wait until another day, because we were late for lunch.

The orphanage visit was a little frustrating today. Since Asel has a bit of a cold, they did not want her on the floor, where I guess she can pick evil carpet germs. We’re a little unclear on the concept, and we felt bad because we had to hold her the entire time, when she clearly wanted to stretch her little legs. We understand they have the child’s best interest at heart, but we wish we could tell them to trust us and let us do what we think is right. Ah well, we did get a few giggles today too. She’s an inquisitive little munchkin, with eyes that are black as the starless night. (I was going to say “coal”, but we’re trying to be environmentally friendly.)

This one’s for you Beth!

Mmmmm. Yummy babies!

We spent the better part of the afternoon watching a Linkin Park concert DVD with Eugene (our translator and man-about-town), while a man named Sergei dismantled our toilet. The push button flush thing broke. He kinda-sorta managed to fix it, and I’ve never seen a plumber come to fix something without bringing ANY tools whatsoever. I guess he’s watched a lot of MacGyver.

Dinner was at the “Chinese” restaurant in town. It was pretty upscale. Our meal cost $8 (for both of us). Sarah had a tofu and bamboo salad which contained neither tofu nor bamboo. They were fresh out of Phoenix bird (seriously) so I settled on the spicy chicken, which was neither spicy, nor chicken. Well, I think it was chicken, I just liked the parallel sentence thing I had going there. And so ends our day.

One final note… Thank you to EVERYONE for all your comments. They really are enjoyable to read and we look forward to our nightly feedback. Please keep them coming (Except for Hugh. Please cease and desist.)

Love to all.

So glad to see you both in different clothing. You started to remind us of those smelly SURVIVOR characters on t.v. Our vote is for the munchkin, send her home to us now! Well, it's nice to be able to see the pics and what clever things you have to say about each day's events. It's a true highlight of our day. Love that picture of Darren eating the baby. It is simply precious.
Miss you,
Stephanie and Jared

Nothing prettier than a brown-eyed (or darker) girl. Nelson and I are busy excavating the backyard for a flagstone patio that will be more favorable to tricycle riding.

I am so happy for you! She is so cute, I am glad to see Darren eating her up. Brielle is a little jealous of sharing her affections but with a little therapy I am sure she'll be okay. All in all I believe she is supremely satisfied with her new found friend and can't wait to have a play date. I am really enjoying your adventures. Congratulations on your beautiful baby girl. I am sure I am not alone in saying I am still crying tears of joy for your family. Lots of love, Teri

...I know when I'm not wanted. I'm just trying to throw a little levity into this otherwise vomit-inducing sap-fest. You'll thank me later.

Enjoyed reading all details - Steve says you must have a lot of time on your hands! Great photos! We are excited for you...finally! You make a lovely family. Kaz seems like a nice place to visit, but.....! (Nice touch with the maps!) What about the luggage? Did I miss that part? Listen, it's a great Spring Break - but soon you'll get tired of all that partying on the beach. We'll be waiting for you and the baby to get back home where you belong. Keep in touch! Lee and Steve

Hi Sarah & Darren, she is a real cutie, I hope I get the quilt done before she gets here. Is your toilet (commode) in the same room as your shower, or is it in a separate room. I saw a show on apartments in that part of the world and they are quite different. Can't wait to meet the little one, hope you are having a great time and continue to do so. Bye, Aunt Edith and Uncle Wayne

Chicken...?

So is it true do you think, Darren? Do babies taste a lot like chicken? I have a lot of recipes... fortunately, none of them involve microwaves! Seriously, it would appear that Sarah is the one that needs to supplement her diet, not you... so make sure you share! Really seriously this time, I hope your DAUGHTER gets well soon so that you guys can all crawl around on the floor together again. You tell the people there that I'm a mom and I don't think she looks sick one bit! So they need to hurry up and build a bridge and get over it! -Nina

Daughters vs Sons
(Anonymous)
2006-03-25 22:32 (link)
Well, as a father of three daughters ("almost" 10, 17, and 19), I can tell ya that daughters get in trouble JUST as easily as sons, so you're not gonna miss out on the late nights lying awake, and the "emergency" trips to get her when her friends dump her someplace she didn't want to go! LOL

LOve the itinerary so far, though, keep up the pedantic diatribe, and we'll keep watching! Who couldn't keep watching with such a cutey in the pictures?!? (And no, I didn't mean you, "Daddy"!)

I"ve spent many years (albeit in the Navy) in other countries, and have MANY stories I can swap with ya when ya get home... That is, if you're not sufficiently traumatized by all the nekkid women on the TV and the constant haranguing by the local spinsters (They were really trying to get your phone number!)

Good luck on the rest of the journey!

Phoenix Bird

good thing they were out of phoenix bird because according to what I believe to be a very good scource (Big Bird in China which Maya is watching right now), the phoenix bird's job is to bring up the sun in the morning. would be a very long 7 weeks in complete darkness!

Asel is beautiful and so much fun to see her smiles!
