Subject: Brrrrr
Mood cold

Thanks to all of you who heeded our call for levity. We sincerely appreciate it. The winner will be announced later in this entry.

We awoke to snow and cold temperatures. And not the kind of snow that makes the whole place look like a magical sparkly winter wonderland, nope it’s the kind that turns to muddy goop and stings your face when it hits you. Yay. Pleasant. So, another day cooped up inside.

Some good news today though. Our official “Gotcha Day” will be on Saturday, May 6th. We’ll pick Asella up at the orphanage at 8 am, and that will be the last she’ll see of that place. It’s very exciting, and now we have to spend the next week trying to figure out how to childproof the apartment and understand the complexities of child care, like, does she eat everyday? And we’ll probably need to get what, 6 or 7 diapers? That’s about right for 12 days, yeah?

Anyway, it’s in low sixties in the apartment and there is no heat source at all in the apartment. We look like wooly mammoths in our modified pj’s. Sarah broke out her Hildegard’s Secret sleepwear collection (thermals, flannel pajamas, socks and mittens) while I continued my late night quest to control all the covers.

So what were we talking about? Lunch? Yes, we had it. Then we went to the orphanage and gave them our donation of a suitcase full of kiddy clothes (much of it kindly donated by the Sheffer family). Irena seemed quite pleased, especially by the more “interesting” outfits, and one of the toys we brought allowed her to complete her set of bird/reptile type things with rings on stick legs. And who wouldn’t want that?

Asella was a moody stinker today. We pushed her a little harder to do some crawling, since she seems hell bent on bypassing that altogether. Here she is attempting to stand up on her own since we obviously weren’t going to help. This was a common position for her today.

She’s still throwing mini-tantrums when we press the issue, but day by day she gets closer and closer, though she’d still rather walk. Her transition from upset to cocksure is quite rapid once she does make it over to us and pulls herself to a standing position, as seen in the photo below.

Then we had dinner at 4 pm. Really. So now we’re back in the apartment, watching the Smurfs in German.

Okay, the moment you’ve all been waiting for, again. The announcement of the photo caption contest winner… Egg roll please. Thanks. Tasty. Now, drum roll please… with the hilariously obtuse submission: “What?! He's not Bill Gates and the Mrs? Get me Angelina and Brad!!” our winner is Loretta Shields of West Hills, California. Please give her a warm round of applause. And Loretta, we’ll meet you at the airport. Let us know what flight you’re on. Honorable mention goes to the criminally insane Mr. Cruise. You too are welcome to come out, if for no other reason than to get you away from your poor family. Thanks for playing everyone.

Send us nice weather. Talk to you later.
