Still tickin'
Good day. It has been a better day. Daddy took an Ambien and got a decent night’s sleep, while the wonderful angelic Mommy pulled the night duty. Asella slept in the crib from about 10 pm to 3 am, and after that she required holding. Sarah’s a bit tired. Tonight she gets to hit the sauce and I’m doing the graveyard shift.

Asella’s cold is a little better today, but she’s still having major issues. The most difficult one we’re dealing with right now is the not sleeping unless we’re holding her thing. We know this is a new thing because she slept in her crib all the time at the orphanage. It’s obviously a combination of the major upheaval, feeling lousy, teething, and the state of the Dollar vs. the Euro.

So, if anyone has any brilliant methods for getting a baby to fall asleep in her crib (without crying herself to sleep – doesn’t seem to work and she’s loud enough to be heard 3 floors down), please share. We’re all ears. She seems completely dead to the world, but the second we lift her away from our body or put her on the crib surface she goes ballistic. We cant figure out how she even knows what’s happening.

But enough with the lack of sleep and cold and all that flim-flam. Here’s the good stuff. In just two days we’ve noticed an increase in her consonant sounds, and she’s just developed a laugh that sounds more “adult.” It’s pretty funny. Also, she did take 3 crawl steps this morning, and though fussy about it, she’s doing well on her nap schedule. She’s also eating like a pig, which is no surprise I guess. We bought some potatoes and a carrot to boil up and mash. I think the carrot came from the Chernobyl region because it was about the size of my thigh.

An outing was in store today as well, so we got her dressed in pretty clothes and took a little walk around the block. Her body language indicates she’s excited to be out there, but still no noise or facial expression to speak of. Here she is with mommy on the playground swing in our complex.

Here’s daddy and Asella by the school.

And here’s the brave girl challenging a knight to a duel.

This last one was taken in between naps. She like us, she really likes us. (So much she can’t bear to be apart, even to sleep!)

We may try and go to dinner with people tonight if Asella is up to it. We’re feeling a little like shut-ins at the moment and could use a little company. Keep reading to see if a stinky diaper clears out the restaurant or whatever other form of mayhem may ensue. And yes, daddy is doing diapers. There’s only been 1 really fun one, and I was off grocery shopping at the time, but I’m sure I’ll get my fair share of those too.

Break time.

And we’re back. Now it’s 9 and Asella’s getting a bath before what is hopefully bedtime. We did go out and it was a success. It was nice to be out of the apartment and see some people. Asella was very well behaved and just took it all in. We do not see any babies in restaurants, so it was a novelty for all the other patrons as well.

The drool is getting very heavy, so teething appears to be a major part of her issues. Welp, she’s screaming again, so I’m gonna go. Goodnight. Let’s hope.

We’re now down to 6 more days in Kostanai, and a little over a week until we get home. Hoo-ah. Home stretch. Literally. Dosvidanya.

Hi Guys,

Mark and I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. We are still fighting the sleep all night in your crib with Logan. I don't like the cry it out senario either so....if you find a good way to work through it let me know and vice versa! By the way...CONGRATULATIONS!!! Isn't parenthood wonderful? Soon if not already you will wonder what you two did together to stay busy all day before baby!

We can't wait to meet Asella!

Good Luck!

I think mommy and daddy should share their Ambien with Asella. Just a little crumb should do the trick. Either that or strap her to your chest, lie on your back, and then you can both sleep at the same time.

Isn't Ambien the one where you do strange things in the middle of the night and don't remember doing them............Anyhoo, I don't know how available they are there but saline spray is the best for helping to unclog stuffed up noses. Also, I know that every time Madison has gotten new teeth, it has been accompanied by a fever and head cold-like symptoms so maybe the two are going hand in hand. As for the sleep issue, some of the best sleep I got in the first year was on the couch with Maddie in my arms. Unfortunately, Asella will have to adapt to new surroundings again in a week........Good luck!

Sorry to hear that your little one isn't sleeping. This has been a big issue at the Natale home. Once you get back I'd recommend "The No-Cry Sleep Solution". But for now, do you have a hairdryer? For whatever reason, that makes Joey go to sleep.

We are currently working on getting him to go to sleep in his crib. It's a real challenge, and we're sleepless here in Denver too.

Darren and Sarah,
Well now you know how the rest of us live! :-) Seriously though, something that makes a constant noise may do the trick. In another post someone recommended a hair dryer and that may be all you have. "White noise" does the trick sometimes. Brooke used to like to be put on the washing machine in her car seat and the noise and vibration would put her to sleep. Unfortunately you will be changing her surroundings soon and she will have to re-adjust again and then again once you are home. Once you put her in her playpen for sleep have you tried leaving your hand or arm resting on her for a little bit. It may just be the closeness she gets when she is being held that helps her to fall asleep. If you were to put your hand against her for awhile once you put her in the playpen she may be able to get back to sleep. Better yet, try putting her in the playpen partially awake and continue to rub her back. Babies "learn" things quickly so she will quickly get used to being held/rocked to sleep if you let her. Then you'll really be stuck. For now though, given the situation, you may just need to do what you can until you get her home and she gets acclimated to her new home and surroundings. I know it's hard to imagine another week or so without good sleep but it will get better once you are back home. Have you called the orphange to see what the typical
"bedtime" routine was there? If you can keep things close to what they did there, it may make her more comfortable. It's worth a call. As far as teething goes, you can give her infant tylenol drops. It is uncomfortable to cut teeth and she likely needs some pain relief! Good Luck and I'll hope for the best for you all!

can she sleep in your bed with you while your there? her world has been rocked and maybe being able to see and feel you guys will make her more at ease. you can always try the sleep books later on down the road...after you've taken care of her basic needs for the next few months and build up that trust. I recommend benedryl for the plane. good luck!
