Are we there yet?
It’s a beautiful day here in Kostanai, and yes, I’m reduced to speaking of nothing but the weather. Well maybe a few other things. This morning a cat was perched in the tree outside our window, 3 stories up. He looked quite content, dozing away in the morning sun.

Fun with babies! We took them outside again today, and while the same perplexed look and soundlessness occurred, Asella did flail her legs around rather emphatically. We took this to be a good sign of progress.

Her soccer education continued today as we worked on her goalkeeping skills. Though I was a bit dismayed by her response to Sarah’s chucking the ball at her head – she thought it was funny, and then tried to eat the ball. We’ll work on juggling and volleys tomorrow.

Here are some more pictures of Asella in various states ranging from demure to sickeningly adorable.

You’ll never believe it, but we went to a new restaurant for dinner. It was Quentin Tarantino themed, with the Pulp Fiction soundtrack on the stereo and posters on the wall. It was in a great location next to 2 construction sites and nowhere near any other stores, so naturally we were the only ones in the place. The food was pretty good and the bathroom had a very interesting poster featuring various shots from a “toilet cam.” I’ll leave the contents to your imagination. Nope, think worse than that. Worse. There ya go.

2 weeks to go. 75% done. Only a quarter left. Sarah just informed me that she misses burritos. Mmmmm… burritos.

I'm wondering...

What do you think any potential book publishers will do with this portion of your "journey"? Maybe they'll start skipping days or maybe they'll decide to have it read more like a book than a diary (or blog). Hopefully, your current self-perceived dryspell won't affect their interest in publishing altogether! Perhaps you should edit down before submitting. (Then again, they're bound to do that themselves, so why not leave some material in your submission for just that very purpose.)

Also, have you come up with any interesting titles yet? How about even just "Gotcha!"? I don't suppose that means anything fun in Russian...? I should inform you that the title "The Search for Delicious" has already been used. I read the book as a kid. And, while tempting, I won't give away what "delicious" turned out to be. I don't think I'd be spoiling anything to tell you that it was NOT K-stani food.

Complete change of subject. So have you and Sarah ever done any "geocaching"? Do you have a GPS with you? Dave and I just started doing this a week ago after he'd heard about it from someone. It's a blast! You can look it up online at www.geocaching.com. It's turning out to be a fun way to get out of the house without spending a fortune.

So! I'm looking forward to seeing your kid for real! I hope this last few weeks goes by quickly for you! TTFN -Nina

Hello to the Straus Family,
My husband Greg, our daughter Kate and myself, Molly, just received your blog from our CAII case manager earlier today, and have been up till the weeeee hours of the night(arvada time), 10:46 mountain standard time, reading about your family's journey to Asella. She is an absolutely beautiful little girl and we feel so grateful for the opportunity to see all that you have been through these last months. Thank you for sharing this not only with your family and friends, but with fellow CAII families who are interested in bringing a brother and son home, we hope in the very near future. We have been on the fence between Russia and Kazakhstan and your journal has in just a short period of time, offered us a fantastic ray of hope and insight into this decision.
We are so excited for your family, for your daughter and for your safe return to the rocky mountains. Thank you to the three of you and all the best to you!
Sincerely and Safest travels,
Molly, Greg and Kate Sparhawk
Arvada, CO
